Update the Linux Kernel on Your 1&1 Server

For 1&1 Dedicated Server Linux and 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server Linux

Find out how to update the Linux Kernel on your 1&1 Server to protect your system against security vulnerabilities.

Before updating the Linux kernel, update your operating system first to ensure stability and security. Then, depending on which Linux distributor you use, enter one of the following commands to check if a new version of the kernel is available.

Red Hat 4 or Earlier

If your system is registered with Red Hat Network (RHN), you can use the up2date command as follows:

# up2date -f kernel

For SMP kernel (multi core or multiple CPU) use the following command:

# up2date -f kernel-smp

Fedora, CentOS, RHEL 5

Use the yum command:

# yum update kernel

If you have already downloaded an RPM file, use the rpm command :

# rpm -ivh kernel*

OpenSUSE

For this distributor, please use the zipper command:

zipper update kernel

Debian and Ubuntu

The apt-get will help you here:

apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
