What is a .uk Domain Name?

This country-code top level domain is offered for individuals, businesses and organisations relating to Great Britain.

There are various .uk domains names that are intended for different purposes:
  • .co.uk is comparable to .com which is short for Commercial. Examples include 1and1.co.uk.
  • .org.uk is short for Organisation. Examples include nominet.org.uk.
  • .me.uk are intended for personal use. Examples include johndoe.me.uk.
  • .uk was originally reserved for official use such as mod.uk, parliament.uk, nhs.uk, etc. but the top-level domain is available for public registration beginning 10 June 2014

If you registered a .co.uk, .org.uk or .me.uk domain name before 10 June 2014, the domain name may be reserved for you to order the .uk equivalent up to and including the day of 10 June 2019.

1&1 Internet only allows orders of .uk domain names through our UK website.

Please note:
If your account does not contain a .uk domain after changing the IPS Tag, look up the WHOIS information of your domain name. If it is tagged to 1AND1 but listed in your 1&1 account, add it through the 1&1 Control Panel. If the TAG is already shown in the WHOIS as 1AND1, the domain transfer will take 1 day.
